Step Bolts
Step bolts, also known as stair bolts, are low-carbon steel bolts with an oversized flat round head and a square neck. They are used for wood fastening applications where the head needs to bear flush against the surface without pulling through. Our step bolts are fully threaded and are commonly used for structural wood applications that require a low-profile head with a wide bearing surface.

Step Bolt Size and Finish Options at Fastener Solutions
We stock A307 Grade A low-carbon steel full-thread step bolts in two finishes: plain and clear zinc-coated. Both meet ASTM A307 Grade A, the standard specification for low-carbon steel bolts for general structural and wood-fastening applications. Grade A covers bolts with a minimum tensile strength of 60 ksi.
- A307 Grade A Full Thread Plain is uncoated bare steel for interior or protected applications, or assemblies that will be painted or coated after installation.
- A307 Grade A Full Thread Clear Zinc (Cr+3) carries a clear zinc plating for outdoor and exposed environments. The Cr+3 coating is RoHS-compliant.
Our step bolt inventory includes diameters from #10 to 3/8" and lengths from 3/4" to 3 1/2", with plain and clear zinc finish options available across the range.
Step Bolts vs. Carriage Bolts: Key Differences
Step bolts and carriage bolts are often confused with each other. Both are low-carbon steel wood fasteners with a round head and a square neck under the head. The differences come down to head size and thread length. Knowing which is right for your application is key to achieving proper performance:
- Step bolts have a wider, flatter head than a carriage bolt. That larger bearing surface distributes load across a greater area and resists pull-through in soft or thin wood. Our step bolts are fully threaded along the entire shank.
- Carriage bolts have a smaller, more domed head. They are better suited to applications where a lower-profile head is sufficient and pull-through resistance is less of a concern. Most carriage bolts are partially threaded.
If your application requires pull-through resistance or a flush bearing on a wide surface, step bolts are generally the right choice. If head size is constrained and the material is dense enough to resist pull-through, a carriage bolt may suffice.
Common Industrial Applications for Step Bolts
Step bolts are used across a range of construction and industrial applications. They are used for applications that need a flush-bearing head on the exposed face of a wood surface. If a standard bolt head or carriage bolt would either pull through or leave too much profile above the surface, step bolts are typically the right solution.
Common applications for step bolts include:
- Heavy timber framing and wood truss connections
- Decking
- Utility pole hardware
- Agricultural equipment
- Industrial wood platforms
- General structural wood-to-wood connections in construction and infrastructure
